Aletheia House is looking for high school students ages 16-18 to serve as Camp Aides for our Kids Who Care Summer Camp

Do you want to gain valuable skills, meet new friends and have fun all while affecting positive change?
If so, Aletheia House wants you to serve as a Camp Aide for our Kids Who Care Summer Camp for low-income youth.
Kids Who Care is a free summer camp program for several hundred Birmingham-area youth ages 6-13. Throughout the summer, campers will engage in activities designed to teach them positive ways to care about their country, community, family and themselves. Camp Aides will help KWC Camp Counselors lead creative learning activities including music, art, fun outdoor games that promote physical health and activity and will teach campers about making healthy nutrition choices including how to prepare healthy snacks.
Camp Aides who complete their 5 week commitment are eligible for a $200 stipend.

- The subject line of the email should read Camp Aide: First Name and Last Name
- One letter of recommendation (from a teacher, pastor, previous employer, etc)
- Answers to the following four questions:
1) Why are you interested in being a camp aide?
2) Have you worked with youth before? If so, where and when.
3) What experiences, skills and passions do you bring to this position that should make us want to select you?
4) Who is the person in your life who knows the most about how you would perform in this position and what would they tell us about you if we called them?

The DeMeco Ryans Foundation (DRF) is pleased to announce this year’s scholarship offering.
The scholarship is targeted to graduating high school seniors in Birmingham City, Bessemer City and Jefferson County schools.
DRF will award a total of ten (10) - $1,000 one-time scholarships to graduating seniors to attend college for the 2012-2013 semesters.
Applications are due Friday, May 25, 2012. Applicants must provide proof of acceptance to college in order for scholarships to be awarded (a copy of an acceptance letter must be attached to application).
Scholarship criteria:
- The attached application must be completed and received by Friday, May 25th at 4pm. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Graduating seniors must have GPA of 3.0 or above accumulative (attach official HS transcript to application).
- Must obtain 2 letters of recommendation from a counselor, principal, pastor or community leader. One (1) letter must be from a teacher or counselor. (Recommendation letter must be attached to application)
- A typed 700 – word or less essay describing your educational goals and how this scholarship will help you achieve those goals.
- Provide official letter of acceptance from the four (4) year college or university you will be attending in the fall.
- Applicants will be notified by Monday, June 4, 2012 on the status of their application. Scholarships will be presented during the annual DeMeco Ryans Football Camp held on June 30, 2012 at Bessemer City High School.

Divine Images Finishing Institute will host S.H.I.F.T. (Students Having Information for Transition) Conference.
This year’s program is open to all young men and young ladies who are high school seniors or college freshman.
It will be held Saturday June 2nd from 9 am – 3pm at Campus A Main Sanctuary - 800 Quebec Drive, Birmingham, AL 35224.
A recent report by the Southern Regional Education Board shows most students who enter college as first-time and full-time freshmen earn a bachelor's degree in 6 years. That report also states graduation rates only average about 55%.

The Jefferson County Workforce Development Summer Youth Program is seeking applications from interested youth.
Through this program, you will work on a job that fits your future career interests, learn great job skills, AND earn money! Find out how to apply....
The Jefferson County Workforce Development Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is scheduled to begin May 14, 2012. This program is designed to give Jefferson County Youth valuable work experience.
- Applications are now being accepted from interested youth for the SYEP.
- The program period will run from May 14 thru August 31, 2012.
- The program is designed to employ youth (ages 16-21) and place them on worksites that are consistent with their career interests and goals.
- The youth will earn $8.50 per hour and cannot work more than 30 hours per week. JCWIA will be responsible for payment of wages.
This will be a 10 week program (8 on the actual worksite) consisting of:
- Week 1: Pre-Work Readiness Training….will begin May 28
- Weeks 2 – 9: Work Experience
- Week 10 : Post Work Readiness Training
