One of the greatest gifts God give us, as humans, is the gift of reading. Reading allows us to experience life through someone else’s eyes, visit places we’ve only dreamed of, and learn about things, people, and ideas we would never know about otherwise. In this society, proficient reading skills are not just fundamental, they are essential in gaining any type success in life. Imagine what life would be like if you couldn’t read?

A study released by the American Educational Research Association in 2011 stated that “a student who can't read on grade level by 3rd grade is four times less likely to graduate (from High School) on time than a child who does read proficiently by that time.” Students living at or below the poverty line are more likely to read below grade level in the 3rd grade and are “13 times less likely to graduate on time than his or her proficient, wealthier peers.”

Faith Chapel Christian Center is partnering with a Birmingham area nonprofit called STAIR – “Start the Adventure in Reading.” STAIR facilitates one on one reading tutoring for 2nd grade students at Wylam K-8 School, who have been identified as “at risk” of not reading at grade level. Check out the Volunteer responsibilities and requirements below.

Tutors

Tutors develop one-on-one relationships, which make this volunteer experience such a rewarding and worthwhile effort. STAIR has an excellent, user-friendly curriculum that makes it easy for volunteers to follow with no outside prep time.
